The recognized colors of the German Longhair are in accordance with the FCI breed standard:
- Single-color brown.
- Brown with white or moldy spots (especially on the chest and legs).
- Dark grey (with larger or smaller dark brown plates; brown head, possibly with blaze, snep or star).
- Light mold (with larger or smaller light brown plates; brown head, possibly with blaze, snep or star).
- Trout mold (many small brown spots on a white background. Head brown possibly with blaze, snep or star).
- Brownish white, pure brownish white or with very few small spots (large brown plates, with saddle or coat, head: brown, possibly, with blaze, snep or star).
- Occasionally, yellow fire can occur as an old Brak heritage.
Non-recognized colors/markings
With the exception of the above mentioned recognized colors, all other colors are not recognized. German Longhairs with a non-recognized color are not allowed to be bred. This also applies to Longhairs which carry a gene of a non-recognized color, as has been expressly stated by the Welverband Deutsch Langhaar. They do not match the breed image.
Examples drawn incorrectly, not limitative
Unrecognized colors or markings are when the ears are not completely brown and/or the white blaze is continuous. Also half white heads are not allowed, nor are grey heads. In addition, blond and yellow dogs are not allowed.
